The annual IoT Week highlights major development in the area Internet of Things. From the 6th until the 9th of June researchers, developers, SMEs and large industries came together in Geneva. Important topics like emerging technologies, privacy and industry 4.0 were discussed at the 7th IoT Week. As part of the conference the European Platforms Initiative (IoT-EPI) engaged with the IoT community, the H2020 ecosystem and introduced interested entrepreneurs to open calls and funding possibilities.
IoT-European Platforms Initiative at IoT Week Geneva
Over 12 IoT experts from all over Europe presented the IoT-European Platforms Initiative (IoT-EPI) at the IoT Week 2017 in Geneva.
The seven research and innovation projects symbIoTe, bIoTope, BIG IoT, VICINITY, TagItSmart!, Agile and Inter-IoT shared their knowledge about interoperability of IoT platforms at the IoT-EPI booth and in panel discussions at the conference.
IoT experts like Arne Bröring (Siemens), Srdjan Krco (DUNAVNET), Sergios Soursos (Intracom Telecom) and Heini Ikävalko (Aalto University) presented the current status and success stories of IoT-EPI also at the workshop “Innovative IoT Platform Technologies“. By now the projects Inter-IoT, TagItSmart! and symbIoTe have already successfully finished their first open calls.
Open Call and Networking Event: Startup Meetup at Impact Hub Geneva
An important goal of IoT-EPI is to make developed technologies sustainable by transforming innovative research into business cases. On this note IoT-EPI held a meeting at Impact Hub Geneva, to connect further with the startup scene in Geneva. Over 50 interested entrepreneurs, startups and participants of the IoT conference met at the co-working space to learn more about IoT platform interoperability. The seven research and innovation projects of IoT-EPI introduced the Swiss ecosystem to open calls. Currently, the bIoTope project has an open call (22nd of May-22nd of August) with funding possibilities up to 150.000€ per project. bIoTope has pilots in Lyon, Helsinki and Brussels. The call is open to Start-ups, SMEs, companies or research institutes in the areas of smart city services, environment, mobility, smart housing and citizen involvement.
Ideas of Tomorrow: Hackathon
Members of IoT-EPI were also involved in the IoT Week’s Hackathon to support knowledge growth. Experts from IoT-EPI offered advice in workshops for the Hackathon participants. Nenad Gligoric (TagItSmart!) explained to the teams how to implement smart tag technology in their solutions. As part of the jury, the innovations expert Erez Mizrachi explained to the five teams how their ideas could evolve into sustainable businesses.
The team ‘Be Right Beach’ won the first prize (5000€) sponsored by Siemens. The team from the University of Cagliari developed an idea how to deploy real time data to ensure a safe experience for tourists at the beaches of Sardinia. In their own words: “Our system will suggest people not to go to a beach, that is in danger for pollution or over-crowding; moreover, sudden changes in water parameters generate an alert to maritime authorities.”
IoT Week 2018 – Bilbao, Spain
The next IoT Week will take place in Bilbao international conference center from the 4th until the 7th of June. Hope to see you in Spain next year!
